Description
Mango is the choicest fruit of Indo Pakistan. It grows in flushes in early spring and gives beautiful red, coppery or pale green leaves, while old leaves remain green. Large, kidney-shaped central stone contains one or more large, starchy embryos. Hanging from long peduncles on the outside of the canopy.
The skin has yellow or green background color, with red/orange blush in many cultivars. Skin contains irritating oils; skin reactions similar to poison ivy exposure often occur - fruit should always be peeled, and a clean knife used to slice flesh.
The flesh is yellow/orange in color, sometimes astringent (turpentine-like) and stringy in lower quality cultivars. Fruiting begins in 6-10 yr for seedlings, 3-5 yr for grafted trees. Alternate bearing may occur in trees over 10 years; may be asynchronous across the canopy, so difficult to detect.
The very popular variety of mango Sindhri is grown in Sindh, Anwar Ratol of Multan, and Langra,Chaunsa, Safaida and Fajri are grown in various parts of Pakistan in abundance.
